World Cup Host South Africa May Have Hotel Shortage

Soccer fans across the world are faced with the worry that host nation South Africa will not have sufficient accommodation by July next year. It has been rumoured that South Africa falls short of some 9,000 rooms, which is a big enough deficit to deter fans from travelling to support their countries.

Despite the World Cup organising committee insisting that there will be plenty of space for everyone by the time fans arrive next July, there are growing concerns over a high crime rate, extortionate hotel prices and inadequate public transport. Visitors are being urged to use official tour operators and be aware of scams in order to avoid disappointment.

FIFA’s accommodation agency is said to be faced with a deficit of 9,000 hotel rooms for the half-million international visitors expected to fly out to South Africa. Although numerous hotels are currently under construction, neighbouring countries such as Mauritius are being used as reserve locations for accommodation. Prices for smaller guest houses and hotel are thought to have rocketed ranging anywhere between £79 per night to up to £2,300.

A spokesman for the committee claims that there is no shortage of accommodation whatsoever and that all the adequate facilities would be available to visitors, including additional transport links. However, local operators are maintaining that there will most likely be a shortage in accommodation as many small lodges are being asked to take in football fans instead of their main source of business generated through regular tourism. Over 6,000 hotels have now been graded but speculation continues to rise about whether or not this will be sufficient.
